History of Shaolin Qi Gong
The roots of today's Qi Gong reach far back into the past: as early as the 4th century BC, various authors were describing "exercises for the cultivation of life" (Yangsheng). These works are already reminiscent of today's Qi Gong.
The term Qi Gong (or Qigong, Chi Gong) is derived from "Qi" (Chi) for life energy and "Gong" for practising. The exercises are therefore "energy or strength work".
Even today, Shaolin Qigong is part of the daily practice of the Shaolin monks.
The training
Every training session is divided into different sections:
During training, particular emphasis is placed on correct posture and breathing. The movements should be performed from the centre of the body in order to achieve maximum effectiveness. Qi Gong exercises can also be performed with music or in nature to promote relaxation and well-being.
Please note that Qi Gong is not a replacement for medical advice, treatment or therapy. We have listed further benefits of the training in extracts below.
